It takes 1/3 of a pound of pesticides to grow enough cotton to make 1 t-shirt.

According to the USDA, over 57 million pounds of pesticides were applied to cotton fields in one year alone.

It is simply not possible to mitigate the environmental impact of this type of broad based application.

It impacts aquatic life, our well supplies (over 33 million people est. exposed to the pesticide Atrazine in the US through their drinking water), bird life, etc. WHO (2002) estimates that about 40,000 agricultural workers die from pesticide application every single year!

There's so much more information that we could share with you, but rather than dwell on the past mistakes and damage that's been done, we will share bits of good that's been done and improvements that are in the works...

Organic Certification: What It Means on the Farm

You may have been to a farm or purchased products grown on a farm that is certified organic. But what does that certification mean?

As Organic Valley farmer Jon Bansen describes, organic certification says a number of things about the way a particular farm is run, and the way that crops on that farm are grown.

For example, certified organic farms are prohibited by law from using toxic and synthetic pesticides, synthetic nitrogen fertilizers, GMOs, synthetic growth hormones, sewage sludge, and antibiotics.

They must also undergo at least one inspection per year by an independent inspector, who verifies that such substances are not used.

Additionally, they must keep detailed records of the practices and inputs used on the farm, ensuring traceability from the farm to when you purchase these products.

Q: Is there a cost associated with organic certification and if so, is it the same for all operations or does it vary by the size or type of the operation being certified?

A: Organic certification costs include an annual certification fee, the expense of the annual inspection, and in most cases a user fee charged by the certifier, which is a very small percentage of the gross organic sales. Certification is renewed annually so the expenses occur annually. The range of expense depends primarily on the size of the operation, anywhere from several hundred to several thousand dollars.

BROWN: Grounds you to earth, helps you keep perspective, warming and life affirming. Wear when you feel frightened or uncertain about the future and, or need to feel safe and secure.
